Family Generation 15 (1900-1941):

My Paternal Grandfather, Fred Murray, was born in Penalosa, Kansas in 1891. My Paternal Grandmother, Mary “Bessie” Nelson, was born in Hubbard, Iowa in 1893.

My Maternal Grandfather Joseph “Joe” Tunison was born in Livermore, Iowa in 1888. My Maternal Grandmother Mabel Lepper was born in Verndale, Minnesota in 1892. In 1907, Grandpa Joe moved with his family from Iowa to Wadena, Minnesota.

On the 13th of July in 1900, my great-grandfather Edward Murray suffered a horrible death while working in his fields. He, somehow, slipped and stepped into the cutting blades of a wheat threshing machine. He was severely injured and, even though he was able to extract his mangled leg from the hopper, he shortly died of his injuries. He was only 37 years old and had a large family of seven children, the youngest of whom was just a year old.

Family: My Mother’s parents, Joe and Mabel, were married in Todd County, Minnesota in 1911.

The families of both of my Father’s Parents, Fred and Bessie, headed for Montana around 1910, lured by the promises of the Homestead Act. They established Homesteads in the Coffee Creek area and began applying the new “Dry-Land” farming techniques advertised and promoted by the U. S. Government.

Family Lore says Fred and Bessie met when Fred volunteered to pick her up at the train station when she arrived to join her family in Montana. They were soon an item and were married in 1912. It wasn’t long before they were living on their own Homestead and raising their family.

My Father Ivan “Hap” Murray was born in Coffee Creek, Montana in 1918, two weeks after the end of World War I. My Mother Audrey “Babe” Tunison was born in Wadena, Minnesota in 1918, one month before the end of World War I.

Murray Tree:

Murray Line – My Great-Grandmother Emma (Sallee) Murray/Corley died on 21 May 1934 in Great Falls, Montana. Both of my Parent’s families were farmers in the 1920s and both fled west in the turmoil of the Great Depression, ending up in the small town of Philomath, Oregon in the early 1930s. That is where my parents met. In 1939, when high school was completed and Hap had secured a job in the Aircraft Industry, they married and returned to Hap’s job in Los Angeles. Curiously, though their residence was in Oregon, they married in Vancouver, Washington. I believe it must have been because of the less cumbersome licensing laws in Washington. As a young man, with World War II approaching, my father desperately wanted to serve in the Air Force but was unfairly, according to him, declared medically unsuited. Instead, he took a job in the booming Aircraft Industry and went to work building planes for the war. My father’s younger brother, Eldin, did serve in World War II as did both of my mother’s brothers.

Summers Family

My Wife and I were both born in the early 40’s in the Los Angeles area. Our births were in the year following Pearl Harbor.
