Events: The great Oklahoma Land Rush occurred in 1889, setting off a rapid build-up in population for an area previously assigned, by treaty, to the Native American Tribes that were sent there in the time of the “Trail of Tears” from 1830 to 1850. It is said that one of Delbert’s Uncles participated in the Great Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. Both of my spouse’s Grandparent’s families shortly followed that crowd from Missouri into the newly opened territory.
Family: Logan and Nevada were married in 1889 in Metz, Missouri. Their first child was born in Metz but then, in the early 1890s, they moved to Indian Territory near present day Tulsa, OK. Margaret Byler, Nevada’s mother, may have moved with them. She was the only grandparent living when they left Missouri and she is buried in Oklahoma. She died the year before Delbert was born.
Jack came to Oklahoma with his parents, Henry and Pliny McLaughlin from Missouri to the small town of Stroud in Oklahoma around 1892. Nellie arrived in Oklahoma with her parents, George and Catherin Stallard, in 1903.
Jack and Nellie were married in 1906, near Stroud, in Chandler, Oklahoma.
My Wife’s Father, Delbert Summers, was born in 1900 in Indian Territory near Tulsa (before it became the State of Oklahoma). My Wife’s Mother, Hazel McLaughlin, was born in 1907 in Stroud, Oklahoma. She was born the same year Oklahoma achieved Statehood.
